April Ross

April Ross is one of the few female beach volleyball stars who have won medals in more than one Olympics. She will be competing in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic medal alongside Alix Klineman who is a first time Olympian. Ross hopes to win more than just her first Olympic medal. Since she's 39 years old she could have her last chance. But she's confident top awards can be achieved. Ross, via NBC Boston, said that when the team performs consistently or well they can earn a gold. So I'm going to take some luck too. Ross was born in the city of Costa Mesa, California in 1982. Her parents and sister were residents there. Apart from participating in a variety of sports, Ross was also a student at Newport Harbor High School. She competed in basketball and track, in addition to her indoor volleyball achievements as a prep athlete. However, she was a standout in this sport. In her time at high school, she was a middle blocker outside hitter and setter on the volleyball court, according to her bio at the college. As a tribute to her efforts she was awarded the Gatorade Award for the National Player of 1999. The year 2000 was the time she received an Orange County Athlete of the Year award in volleyball. Ross and Klineman are performing their roles in 2017. But, Ross played a significant role on the beach volleyball circuit before the pairing. She's won big competitions with different players. A couple of those is an icon in the volleyball world. She teamed up with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and also was Klineman's trainer. Ross, the teammate of Kessy's, who took home the title of world champion with Kessy in 2009, was also a major force on an international level. In the 2012 Olympic Games, they were awarded a gold medal. The Misty Maytreanor legendary team along with Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. Ross was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's departure. They won the bronze medal in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics 2016. Ross was a student athlete for USC Trojans before her pro career. She played in high school, and even before hitting the beaches as a professional. Ross's playing time with the Trojans was amazing. In 2000, as a freshman she played her way to Pac-10 and NCAA The Freshman of the Year awards and was also an All-American. Her performance also assisted in helping the Trojans to make it to the Final Four. Her personal tragedy was a crushing loss in her sophomore season however she was able to return as an All-American. Over the course of her final two seasons she led the Trojans up to the summit and clinched consecutive national championships. She was a fantastic player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the best female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross majored at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross was not able to witness Ross become the highest beach volleyball levels. Ross lost the breast cancer that she battled in 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. She continues to cherish her mother who died. Margie remains an inspiration on and off of the shore.
